Located in San Mateo, CA, this beautiful 1950s Eichler had been well-loved for more than three decades and was ready for its next chapter. We wanted to preserve the home's architectural history while reimagining the interiors and layout. In the kitchen, we removed an existing wall to open sightlines between the main living spaces and the backyard. This update also created space for a breakfast nook, which we layered with vintage Eames dining chairs and a wool rug from Armadillo. We specified materials and finishes throughout with an emphasis on craftsmanship, including the kitchen backsplash, which is composed of seconds from Heath Ceramics; we carefully composed a unique mosaic pattern that speaks to the home’s mid-century roots.
The furnishings mix refinished family heirloom pieces with vintage finds selected to feel cohesive with the Eichler vision and style. The living room has a vintage Henredon oval "surfboard" coffee table and midcentury lounge chairs, both sourced from the Field Theory shop and refinished by Revitaliste. We collaborated with the client to incorporate several pieces of artwork, including a painting commissioned from Marcel Rozek and an antique textile newly framed as art. We carried the home’s exterior color into the interior to improve flow between spaces. The result is a more open, connected home that still feels personal and draws from different chapters of the clients’ lives.
